Romania debuts on Friday, at 9:45 p.m., in the 2026 World Cup preliminaries, against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
„After glorious seasons at Man City, Roma or Inter Milan, Edin Dzeko comes to Bucharest leading the Bosnia-Herzegovina team from the field as a Fenerbahce player,” writes FRF about the Romanians’ opponents.
The all-time leading scorer of the Bosnian national team and the all-time top scorer will be joined by teammates from 16 different championships, summoned by the coach Sergej Barbarez (53 years old), a former class striker in German football. In office since April 2024, the coach is in his first career experience.
According to frf.ro, in the squad for the duel with the tricolors, Bosnia-Herzegovina has only one player from the domestic competition, the third goalkeeper, Hadzikic from Velez Mostar. The rest are names from the first two echelons of Germany and Italy, Ligue 1, Championship, Segunda Division, plus the first leagues of Switzerland, Turkey, Czech Republic, Croatia, Serbia, Russia, Cyprus and Denmark.
The best-rated, at present, are the striker Demirovic (Stuttgart), along with the defenders Dedic (Marseille) and Kolasinac (Atalanta).
Romania has played against Bosnia and Herzegovina six times so far, winning four and losing two, with no matches ending in a draw. The last „double” came in 2022, in the Nations League, when Romania lost 0-1 away but won 4-1 at home with goals from Dennis Man, George Puşcaş (twice) and Andrei Raţiu.
